Sustainability

Technology for Sustainable Change:

While Oakland Digital advocates technology as a means of enacting digital equity and social justice, we recognize at the same time the importance of operating and manufacturing said technology with respect for the environment. Several staff members have degrees in architecture with a focus on green building and environmental sustainability. Oakland Digital also promotes green computing and eco- friendly practices, as we:

  • Power-down CPU’s and all peripherals during extended periods of inactivity.
  • Use recycled liquid-crystal-display (LCD) monitors rather than cathode-ray-tube (CRT) monitors.
  • Try to do computer-related tasks during contiguous, intensive blocks of time, leaving hardware off at other times.
  • Use notebook computers rather than desktop computers, whenever possible.
  • Power-up and power-down energy-intensive peripherals according to need.
  • Minimize the use of paper and properly recycle waste paper.
  • Use the power-management features to turn off hard drives and displays after several minutes of inactivity.
  • Donate or dispose of e-waste according to federal, state and local regulations.

Oakland Digital is Green:
We promote usage of clean, renewable energy by providing Green workshops about ways that community members can change their current energy usage so that we and future generations can live in a cleaner, healthier environment. Together, let us prepare environment-conscious leaders!
